Johnstons of Elgin’s selvedge footwear prototypes

Fabrics designed by Fariah (Duman Bibi Shamshad) at the Master of Design Innovation and Collaborative Creativity, Innovation School, The Glasgow School of Art, from Johnstons of Elgin’s pure cashmere and fine cotton selvedge trims originally for waste.

Fariah’s ‘Zero Waste’ project fabrics resulted from a series of weaving and textile design techniques applied for testing applicability in new products, including footwear manufacturing. The testing of a number of samples in footwear occurred in the context of a wider collaboration, including the Anti-Amnesia project (funded by FCT) based at ID+. The prototypes were designed by Pedro Carvalho de Almeida and Abhishek Chatterjee, in collaboration with Manuel Costa Teixeira.

The footwear production experiments took place at manufacturing facilities in Arouca, next to breathtaking Serra da Freita’s “magic mountains” pictured below.
